The Sound of Silence


Few moments of silence

Of stillness, quiet & peace,

And of unbound harmony

That never seems to cease.


Moments of bliss & solitude

And calmness around you,

Moments serene & simple

No matter how few.


Have you ever felt like seeking silence at dawn

As if dropping from the veils of morning,

Or seeking silence at dusk

As if arising from the night falling ?


Have you ever felt the touch of silence

Slowly descending upon you,

Its gentleness & serenity

Taking hold of you ?


Have you ever heard the sound of silence ?

For it does have a sound

So soothing & pleasant

With tranquility profound.


Each one of us does seeks silence

At some moment or the other,

To feel the silence, to hear the quietness of silence

And to be free from all bother.


But the sound of silence

Is no more its own,

Its charm & pleasantness

Is long before gone.


In the dark the shrill cries

Break the silence of the night,

A hungry child on the roadside

Or perhaps under a street light.


The day has to also face

The red earth coloured by violence,

Violence- The enemy of humanity

The killer of silence.



But still the turbulent mind seeks silence

Nothing but a few moments of silence,

To feel the serenity of silence

To hear the quiet sound of silence.
