If highly placed sources in the Railways are to believed, then ICF manufactured Mumbai local train stands a high chance of making it to the Guinnes Book of World Records. The Mumbai Rail Vikas Corporation (MRVC) is confident that the swanky purple and white Siemens-MRVC coaches, churned out from the factory's Headquarters in Chennai at record speed, will cross the 1000 mark in the coming months. The factory has turned out 816 coaches so far & the remaining 184 would probably be made in another 3 to 4 months. Under the Mumbai Urban Transport Project Phase-I, 129 12-car Rakes are expected to come in the city. In the 2nd Phase, 69 12-car Rakes are expected. Till date 68 rakes have left Chennai. While 63 are commissioned (20 on C.Rly. & 43 on W.Rly.), three are under commissioning & two are under transit. Five are presently under production & an equal number in preparation. "There is enough materials for 85 Rakes. This would be 1020 coaches & a world record". said MRVC Managing Director P.C.Sehgal. He added that they are yet to write to Guinness Book regarding the feat.
